BALANCING WORK AND LIFE

BALANCING WORK AND LIFE

All too often success is seen in terms of materialistic possessions and financial gains. It is easy to fall in the trap of working long hours striving to achieve a good standard of living but in the process neglecting relationships, self development, leisure pursuits, and personal happiness.

Balancing work and life will help you understand what success means to you and explains how can live your life with renewed vision and purpose. You should make sincere efforts to focus on your true priorities and develop healthy attitude to achieve success in yourself.

As you begin to achieve a better balance in your work and life you will discover new levels of creativity, fulfillment and happiness.

To create a balance between the demands of your work and your life, you need to examine what success means to you. Start by classifying your values, purpose, roles and attitudes so that you have something to measure achievement against.

People often work hard to gain ‘success’ without knowing what success really means.
You may climb the career ladder but are you fulfilled with your work? Do you live a good contented family life? Ask yourself now, when was the last time you achieved AND enjoyed something at work? What about Achieved AND Enjoyed with your family; your friends? And how recently have you achieved AND enjoyed something just for you? We receive different messages about success – through the media, our families and our culture. But ultimately success comes from leading a balanced and fulfilled life.

To define success, start by classifying your values schedule times and think about what is most important to you. Put your values at the centre of your life so that you can retain greater balance, vision and happiness in every area of your life.

Success is an attitude, and not just a set of achievements or financial gain. If this was not the case, then every high achiever would consider themselves successful. But in fact many rich famous and accomplished people have material success but do not actually feel true success or fulfilled. So understand that success is not just found in outer things but is located within yourself. Cultivate success as a state of mind so that you stop chasing false goals and expectations and start living your life focused on what matters to you.

Achievement and Enjoyment are the front and back of the coin of value in life. You can't have one without the other, no more than you can have a coin with only one side. Trying to live a one sided life is why so many "Successful" people are not happy, or not nearly as happy as they should be.

At work you can create your own best Work-Life Balance by making sure you not only Achieve, but also reflect the joy of the job, and the joy of life, every day. If nobody pats you on the back today, pat yourself on the back. And help others to do the same.

Your life is like a jigsaw. It is made of different pieces. Ensure that you make time for each important aspect of your life – Your work, your relationships, family, leisure time and self improvement and begin to focus on your life as a whole, then success will be yours. When you encounter success, make sure you celebrate it. Celebration boosts your confidence and helps make success a state of mind.

Recognize, reward, enjoy and share success in yourself with others. Remember that a good work-life balance is achieved through mutually supportive relationships at work as well as at home.

Be the first one. Form a Queue and beat the heat this summer

Be the first one. Form a Queue and beat the heat this summer

Dear Readers,

I enclose once again excerpts from the 19th edition of "No News" newsletter.

We need a Queue culture on our bus and taxi stops. It holds significant value and should be gradually put in to practise before the most advanced transport systems are made available in this country. In Dubai, the Metro is coming, in Abu Dhabi the new Abu Dhabi Bus and Taxis. What will be the benefit of all these advancements if no queue system is followed on our rail and road?

I sincerely look forward to your support on this specific issue. Let us begin a Queue culture on our public bus and taxi stops.....

God Bless and have a great week ahead,

Ramesh Menon

An Inspiring Moment shared (AIMs) with Team 1 - Anil Pakale

An Inspiring Moment shared (AIMs) with Team 1 - Anil Pakale

My Motto(s) in life : My aim would be to help everyone around me, to stay calm, spread the message of brotherhood.

Remember, Mother Teresa. Treat everyone, be it rich or poor, at par.

When you do good, it brings in precious great feeling that is in fact pure happiness. When you do for yourself, it does bring in some happiness of fulfilment. However, it is far too less when it is done for others.

Respect every individual that comes across you and show that you care for his values and opinions. This will make them feel comfortable in interacting with us.

Environment comes next. We have to inculcate habits and practise what is best for the environment. We have to hand over the world to our kids in a better shape than it is today. There is a lot that needs to happen on that front. Each one of us must make cohesive efforts in that direction. There is no option. Or else, we will see survival war amongst human beings. It is possible to change the direction of the world. We must all play our part.

Now that I have achieved what I wanted for myself, I am now going to devote all my life for serving the community keeping in mind the above values and try to reach it to many whom I come in contact with my day to day life through my own simple possible ways and means. We are all guests in this material world and there is no reason why we should be getting into conflicts. We do not need much for living. Yet, we strive to get more and more. This must stop once for all. We must try to be content with what the almighty has given us and live a life that is full of Peace and Happiness. It is not difficult. I will be devoting all my time in spreading the message to all my friends. And when everyone who reads this, does the same to their friends, we will all be in for a beautiful world.

Good feelings will bring in great values in life free of any stress and nervousness. Health will automatically be at it’s best when we all are sound in our minds.

An Inspiring Moment shared with Team 1 - Nandakumar Perimpilavil

An Inspiring Moment shared with Team 1 - Nandakumar Perimpilavil

My Motto(s): In every stage of life we need to have a plan which is practical and possible to execute. I like to practise setting up daily targets in life whether it is at the work front or at home which will take you to achieve eventual targets in life.

Considerations for others, a receptive attitude and willingness to learn from mistakes make one’s path to achieve one’s aims easy and comfortable - a theory I believed always.

Sharing the views with and convincing others is an art and mutually beneficial.

Setting up goals in life is not an easy task. One really has to think and set realistic goals. This starts from the early days of one’s life. Right from childhood one hears about setting goals. During school days parents and teachers guide you to channel your talents and aptitude in the right direction. But I do not believe in forcing a child to achieve goals which are unrealistic or not in line with his or her natural talents or aptitude. Children should not be compelled to opt for an art or sport or subject which he/she has no genuine interest in. It is all about identifying their capabilities and tastes and accordingly groom them to set goals.

Getting organised in your daily life with a fair amount of discipline will make your journey in life a lot more easier. One need to have that will power though for same. I try to do the same . Disappointments at times and setbacks are natural and we need to take them into our stride while thriving to learn from mistakes and achieve what we are hoping for. Whatever you do in life ensure to enjoy every moment of it and cherish your memories.

Nandakumar Perimpilavil, or "Nanduvettan", for all his friends and well wishers, started career as a Bank officer in India and then moved over to airline field. He is in charge of Finance & Admin for Middle East for more than a decade now for Srilankan Airlines. A brilliant student during his school and college days, he was school first for SSLC and did his degree education with distinction. His activities did not remain within the class room. He was active in cricket, chess and carroms in school and college and sang for a troupe in the 90s. The interest continued and recently he sang for a programme called Ninavu in Kairali. Music is passion for him and to an extent cricket too. He considers music as divine and universal that which takes you to a serene world where all your pains are removed by it’s power.

Nandakumar lives in Sharjah with his wife Suvarna Nandakumar, a graduate in Maths and a perfect partner with equal or more interest in music. Their daughter Mrinalini is a student of DPS Sharjah in Gr 8. She is also a student of Kathak and Classical music and plays Basketball with interest.

No News 17th edition - Crossing the Barriers

No News 17th edition - Crossing the Barriers

Dear Friends,

Welcome to read the 17th issue of No News. Watching the ongoing IPL 2009 series on television gives me opportunities to do interesting analysis of team building and man-management skills. A “Kissed” (keeping it short sweet entertaining daily) event which is definitely going to take the game to many more grounds across the world, giving viewers a management lesson or two each time it happens. It was boring till the Super over match which Rajasthan Royals won where Kamran Khan and Yousuf Pathan wrote history by match winning performances. Spin bowling is going to be the mantra for future matches as it gives preparedness and alertness to the un-expected twists and turns which those slow bowlers extract out there from nowhere. This makes the IPL matches an exhibition of strong characters and a sense of ownership from individuals to achieve success. After all, life is like that too, and those who react to situations which comes on their way and succeed it in the coolest form wins.

I was happy to watch the performance of a small group of children learning the art of playing mrudangam, a South Indian percussion instrument, online and then performing on stage for the first time. Impressed beyond words, I took an effort to meet the master who taught them. It was none other than Vikraman Nampoothiri, son of the legend late Sri Korambu Subramanyan Nampoothiri. Watching the performance of those little children on video brought back memories of my childhood when the late Sri Subramanyan Nampoothiri himself came to our home and taught us lessons with devotion and dedication despite having severe difficulties in life to meet the daily chores from his meagre earnings obtained from the local temple. His student’s used to gather at each other’s house and vie each other for the perfectly tuned mrudangam to get to play on it rather than on the practise instrument, which was heavier and not finely tuned. Those were the days when every rupee mattered and the extra additional amount spent on art form was taken seriously with utmost diligence for repayment in terms of productive participation and creative performance. Luckily it was not also a time when art forms where taught in capsule forms for performing abruptly in school festivals or reality shows. Till the basics were perfected, no guru dared to display his student’s talent. Those days are gone and now art forms, whatever it may be, are taught on matter of fact basis for event specific purpose.

Many times when talent in children are explored, the question of valuable time required for learning and the efforts of parents to support and nurture them grow comes in to prominence. Very few parents stands out from this and observe their children and guide them and carry them along to practise an art form to perfection which may assist their child to master later in his life the art of man management. Participation of children in performing and non-performing art forms are therefore very important for a child’s character formation and personality development. It is due to this reason that Talent Share support those initiatives which promote the value of Sharing Knowledge without profit. Imagine, you being master of a spin bowling trick, which you mastered with several years of dedicated practise and which gave you name and fame. Everyone will praise you for what you do when you continue to do it. However, if you held on that art of yourself without sharing it with others, after some period, no one will remember about it including yourself. Whereas, if you make an attempt to share the tricks of it with someone who you feel benefit from it, he may develop it further and create it’s way into the history books of achievements and achievers.

A few months ago I had the opportunity to attend a religious function organised here. The ceremonial proceedings of it were lengthy and continued throughout the day from early morning start till mid afternoon and followed by sumptuous lunch. This required huge effort in terms of organisation, decoration and arrangements. As this was an annual event, I used to participate in all aspects of it, including the final arrangements on the previous night, working without sleep. The involvement, team work and co-ordinated effort combined with a unique objective made sure that none of the volunteers felt any signs of tiredness or lack of enthusiasm till it finished. As I was watching the proceedings this year from the extreme end of the auditorium, a young man came near and stood by me. He was not knowing that I was observing him. He was one of the volunteers who worked all night long to make the event happen that morning. He called his friends, who had come to attend and was explaining to them how they did all the arrangements before the early morning start. Listening to them silently, I told myself, no one is indispensable in this world. A few years ago, I was one amongst the volunteer group doing all the things he was talking about.

The value of knowledge one holds with him get prominence only when it is shared with his fellow human being who have not had the same opportunity to achieve it. Various objectives of Team 1 blogs like Talent Share and cbseplus are purely oriented towards promoting knowledge and talent sharing. cbseplus initiative is slowly gaining momentum in terms of valuable contents and guidance with focus on forming an e-assistance to children opting for higher studies. Continuing the progress, we are now approaching educational institutions in this region that does not have web sites for their schools. With a team of dedicated members, and with absolutely no commercial interest, Team 1 and cbseplus blogs will help to create informative web sites for schools to disseminate valuable information to parents and children and also to initiate easier interactions between school authorities, teachers and students. Administrators of schools, who are reading this newsletter, may contact for further information and express their interest for participation if any.

In the game of pole vault, the higher you achieve the height, the higher the bar is raised for the contestant to attempt for a win. We all know well it is difficult to cross the barriers. It requires enormous amount of good will, support, hard work and dedication to move even an inch forward. I reiterate my request to all my readers to participate without inhibition and prejudice in cbseplus and Talent Share initiatives for the benefit of several talented and knowledge seeking children. A Talent or knowledge within you is to be shared – let that be our mantra.

God Bless and have a great week ahead.

Photo Speaks - Abu Dhabi Bus & Police ads for Traffic Safety

Photo Speaks - Abu Dhabi Bus & Police ads for Traffic Safety

Moving slowly through the city traffic is the most difficult part during the morning session of our daily working life. And if it stops completely due to a wrong parking by someone, what will be your mood? Especially in this part of the world, where most of the banks and government offices close at 2:00 pm and if one has to run between various points for multiple tasks, he will definitely be thinking, God, are you seeing all these, we have to reach at x,y and z destinations before they close. Summer is here and the temperature is rising and the tempers of the drivers will also follow suite. However, this particular advertisement on an Abu Dhabi Bus by Abu Dhabi Police convinced my belief that the authorities are aware of the wrong parking situations happening at many parts of the city. Thank you sirs, for highlighting this problem for the attention of the general public, who are of course aware of it, but helpless with the lack of parking areas at prominent spots. May be this is an indication of stringent actions going to be enforced in future for offenders who double park and block the traffic.

Solution upfront is to start using Abu Dhabi Bus… The new ones are coming soon. Why not? Enjoy the view around from a different seat and different height.

Just one person can make a difference

Just one person can make a difference

The on-going road development works and the parking worries give me occasional opportunities these days to travel by the Abu Dhabi Bus or Taxi during office hours and outside. I consider this as an opportunity to move away from my driving responsibilities and also from the crazy road behaviours for some time and opportunistically utilise the view and life around from a different angle and height. However, many times, these waiting, ends up in frustration looking at the senseless behaviour of fellow road users to rush in for the taxi or the bus, irrespective of others who have been waiting there before them. Like the situation in the movie Saveage Harvest, it reminds me of a predatory instinct in human being each time it happens. However, a chance drive to a city suburb in Ajman on a Friday afternoon made me realise it is not the case everywhere. I was waiting after a sumptuous lunch from a restaurant inside my car and noticed this act of decency by a group of ordinary passengers most of them labourers working in camps. As usual, my camera did not miss the opportunity of recording a series of precious acts and opportunity for me to promote TQM and Positive Thinking values around. Watching them, I thought, how good it be, if the same social conscience and sense prevailed with the fellow users in the more cosmopolitan cities like Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Immediately after the visit, I send the story to Gulf News for their new section Community Report, with a different version. Yeah, English is one language which we can manipulate according to our moods and swings. Thank you Gulf News for accepting it and continuing to allow me to test my writing skills. Together, it proves, You too can make Us create a world of difference.

The photos will tell you the complete story.

QUEUE PLEASE and Have a great week-end.

Team 1 Best of Talents - Quality Appreciation 2008

Dear Friends who love words, graphics, sound & music,

Year 2008 have been very topsy turvy for many. However, for some of us who remained with a creative outlook, the year has been as productive or more.

As a freelancer and as a promoter of TQM & Positive Thinking values, I sincerely like to appreciate all those untiring and thankless efforts and pass on my appreciation to some members who came into prominence during the year 2008. In due course I will upload many of the commendable works by them which motivated me many times and inspired me to come out with an initiative of this sort.

I hope this initiative will be an inspiration for all the friends from media and it is an assurance that there are people who closely watch your work and appreciate your efforts. In 2009, I wish the list gets bigger and better and I hope all readers could form an opinion poll and evaluate it well in advance.

Sincere regards and All the very best,

Ramesh Menon
